im seriously starting to consider soa....does ne one have a good writeup....how much am i lookin to spend...(i can weld)

probably a good place to start is a R.E. SOA kit, under $400. THen youll need an SYE and new drive shaft 400-600.

If your tearign the Jeep apart, also a good time to upgrade your rear axle because the D35 is not the strongest axle out there.

I know not what you were looking for, but I would atlest do some searches on these
Good luck, Im in the middle of doing an SOA to my Jeep started out just swap out my R.E. 4.5" for stock springs SOA, and toss in a new rear alxe.

Well I have now have 3/4ton front and rear axles, hi steer 1.5" SOA springs much bigger tieres SRS Tcase swap, reroute exhaust, belly up ect ect

The only things I havent changed from my original plan are my shackels, engine and VIN#

TBone, what size tires are you running with the 1.5" SOA springs?

There's so many different approaches to going SOA, that there's no right answer to your question as far as money you'll be required to spend nor parts list required to do the trick. I know this doesn't answer your question, but some penny pincher (and short-cut Kings), modest approach to SOA have been known to go SOA for next to nothing.

Let me explain:

They carefully cut off the spring & shock mounts, then rewelded them as required to the new placement. No charge

Used the same stock spring leafs. No charge

Used the same shocks because new shock mount location was higher. No charge

Re-routed brakelines f&r. No charge

Used drop pitman & bent steering components to "work". ~$45

Installed drop t-case. ~$15

Lengthened stock driveshaft in there garage. No charge

Is this the formula for success? I guess for some.

This is a list of some of the components I used:

Thanks for the list. I am in the process of getting parts together for an 8.8 swap and SOA also.

One question though, why 33's? I'm not knocking you're set up, I just want to run a bigger tire and I'm trying to figure out what springs to get.

Joe Dillard
09-14-2003, 05:20 PM
I got the 33's in August '01 & went SOA in March '02. They still had plenty of wear left on them, so I decided to stick with them for the time being.

I believe 35's will fit ok depending which wheel I swap to, and steering stops & suspension bumpstop mods I do.

I'd like to swap to 35's before too long.

Do you think 3.5" springs would be enough to clear 37's?

would recomend 1.5-2" springs and a little fender trimming for 37-38" tires, 3.5" + SOA is huge!

Yeah, thats what I was thinking.

So I guess the 4.5" springs and the add a leaf are outta the question? j/k:clapping:

guy in my town runs soa w/skyjacker 6" monolinear leaf, and of course its accompinied by a 3" body lift, thats netting around 15" of lift and i forget what size tires, at any rate I think I can get my lifted jeeps hood under his rocker panel:agree:

Unless it's had some serious tweeking, I'll bet it's scarry to drive!

Jester, yep.....I gotta agree, if 36-38's are in the mix, it's time to break-out the sawzall, especially if the rig is going on tough trails. :beerchug:

And what are the differences between the stage one and two kits?

stage 2 has the the track bar bracket and the drop pitman arm

so if i get the re antiwrap perches there is no need for a torsion bar?

im gonna run 35's
would stock springs be enough....and ill prob just go with the more steering kit

I already had a drop pitman, and my plans while going SOA didn't include running a tracbar or swaybar. So I opted for the Stage#1.

Not only that, I got lucky because the original owner of MORE (Chris O), had some items for sale that he didn"t sell to Allen (current owner of MORE)that i obtained at super prices that I couldn't pass-up!! :D

The MORE SCK works flawless! I'm 100% satisfied with it's performance.

The stock leafs will work, if serious sawzall action is applied! :D :D
I wouldn't go as far as saying that an anti-wrap bar isn't desired. In almost all cases, it's a must. But for me it hasn't been a big deal, "yet". :)

I feel this is mostly due to the way I combined parts, plus a couple lucky things that I happened to do.

Reverse eye leafs and rear frame mounted bump stops that are mounted just past the rear spring hanger, contribute the most towards the lack of an anti-wrap bar for me.

When the leaf tends to want to flex in an "S" shape, the bump stops mentioned earlier, help prevent the rear pinion from over rotating.

we've always made our own spring perches (my buddies run SOA, i'm going SOA this winter). basically all you need is some rectangular tubing, cut a hole in it (hole saw), the same diameter as your axle tube, drill your centering pin hole, and cut it in half. viola, 2 spring perches. then, since you can weld, fab up some shock mounts. you'll need the SYE also. i'm probably going to make my own shackle reveral for the front of mine at the same time as i go SOA, as i want to run some super long shackles f/r (unless i can get my hands on BDS's new top secret revolver type shackles). i'm going to run either bronco II or f-150 springs in the rear, and waggy's in the front. this should give me plenty of room to run at least 38's with the amount of cutting i plan on doing to the body. what axles do you plan on running?

I had an SOA set up in my old YJ with stock springs.. Super flexy but had axle wrap galore. A quick fix was to run it with an add a leaf. That worked for about two years until the springs sagged again.

Check out this months JP(Sept) with Silver CJ airborne. There is an SOA write up in it.

I really like the soa.
Im running rear springs on both ends with a full length add a leaf. The front perches are rubicon and the rears are homemade out of 1/4 in. box. I still had bad wrap with the aal so I built a wrap bar.

Ah, I see you wheeled with one of my old freinds! Boulder Bob! God his jeep looks great, its changed sooo much over the last few years. Bob is one of the nicest guys you could ever wheel with, and a damn fine driver! He has spotted me in some pretty challenging spots, and always incouraged me to push my little yj that much further. Ive done some decent obsticals (for a 31" tired, open diffed yj) with the help of bob on many occasions. to bob :beerchug:

Back to the subject at hand. I hope to go soa soon, money is the big factor. To do it right it costs a decent penny. I plan to peice it out, as apposed to a kit like rubicon. The big cost for me is in the sye, regear (hopefully upgrade rear), steering in front, and tires. I would have done it by now if i could run 31's, 4.10's and a transfer case drop on it!!! :bangnerd: So i may just put on a 1inch body lift, regear, and go with 33's and then the sye for now. That will put me in a good spot to go soa down the road.

im running SOA on 2" BDS, 1.25BL, TJ flares, and MORE 5/8 shackles and i could easily clear 38s. my 36s at time look small...im going down to a stock main leaf and use everything but the main leaf from the BDS set. hopefully will get me down to a more manageable size...
