I am having a problem with my engine. It seems to be getting a little hot. I dont know if it is just the gauge or if it is reading the right temp.

The engine will warm up and go to over 210 but not into the red and then it will drop down to half way between 100 and 210. The needle on the gauge never stays constant. I dont think this is normal.

I have replaced the fan clutch, water pump, radiator, thermostat(with the 195* that the parts store said is stock) and the engine is only 1 year old and I still have the same results.

So my question being what thermostat temp does everyone run, is my guage acting normal ( or do most peoples gauges stay at a constant temp ) and what else should I do?

My jeep is a 1989 2.5L

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, first thing you need to do is verify if you have a overheating problem or an electical problem with the guage unit!

You need to use either a manual radiator temp probe to verify the temp esp with it is acting up...at work I use an inferred gun which allows me to get a rad top hose temp without opening up the radiator cap...

If electrical you could take off the temp sending wire at the sending unit...open the guage should peg out...grounded it should go all the way to the left, cold side...also make sure all your engine grounds are good...one from firewall to top of engine and the one from the battery ground to engine and frame ground.

Any signs that it is actually overheating...boiling over? If the bottom hose is not getting hot it could be a sticking t-stat or maybe put in backwards?...I've seen this a few times on used cars :)

Also make sure you fan belt is tight and not slipping.

This should get you looking in the right direcction.
