View Full Version : ? on YJ D30. Changing seals when going to TJ shafts?

I looked in search but did not see what I was looking for. I have a 1992 YJ that I am gonna put TJ shafts into. I bought both driver and passenger side shafts from Randy R&P. They said I will have to put a new style seal just to the passenger side of the differential. I have heard of some people not replacing that seal and just running the standard YJ seals. Has anyone done this swap and not replaced with the new style seals.
Thanks,
Allen

I don't think that will work. I learned this the hard way. I put it all together and the 90 wt leaked out the passenger side. That is because the YJ shaft has a larger diameter at the disconnect, which is where the OEM YJ seal is located. The TJ shaft, having no disconnect, is a consistent diameter it's entire length. Therefore, you are going to have a gap allowing gear oil to escape on the passenger side if you install TJ shafts in a YJ and you don't do anything with the seal.
You have two options. Either put a different, smaller ID seal in where your YJ axle disconnect used to be (that is what I did). The other option is to remove the carrier and put it in there just like it is on the driver's side, which is the way it's done on a TJ.
Sorry, I can't remember the part number for the seal that goes in where the factory YJ one is (where the disconnect mechanism used to be). This would be easier, since you won't have to remove the carrier. I got the part number from Warn, and I think it may be listed on the instruction sheet for their alloy inner shaft kit for the YJ. If you find the right seal for this option, you may also need to make yourself some tools to remove the old seal (a length of 1 1/2" pipe) and to install the new one (threaded rod and fender washers work fine). HTH!

This is very possible.
I am going to be doing this on a friends front axle in the future, and here is an article that shows how to do this:

Thanks MEATBLANKET. I will look for the warn alloy shaft instructions and see if I can find a seal number.

A drivers side seal should work on the passenger side at the vacuum dissconnect. The TJ shaft isn't machined there though... Maybe a drivers side seal would work on the passenger side of the pumpkin if there's an indentation for one.

You know what? I think you are right about that one. I think maybe they are all the same seal, and the "oddball" seal is the OEM YJ seal at the disconnect. I also agree that a driver's side seal should work on the passengers side of the pumpkin.
Although the TJ shaft isn't machined for the seal at the disconnect, I put my passenger side seal there and haven't had any leakage issues in the approximately 30,000 miles since I put it in. Now that I said that, it will probably start sometime tomorrow:naw:

I dont see how the passenger OEM seal would work at all with a TJ shaft. The seal shouldnt even touch the TJ shaft.

If you put a drivers side seal on the passenger side at the vacuum dissconect. You can probably just shine the TJ shaft with a brillo pad.

You are correct. I agree with you. I was saying that I think the driver side seal will work on the passenger side of a YJ, at either the disconnect or in the pumpkin, with the TJ shaft. Does that make sense?
