Can anybody tell me if the ring & pinion in a TJ Dana 35 will work in a YJ 35? I'm selling my TJ gears & a guy w/ a YJ wants to know if they'll fit.

Not firsthand knowledge, but I spoke with a guy in Tellico about 2 years ago that had wanted to put TJ gears in his YJ (does his own gears) and the TJ gears were smaller than the stock YJ gears. I didn't think to ask at the time if he meant the actual R&P or the spiders. Call a gear shop and get the numbers for each, see if they match.

I am almost certain that they are the same. I know the ring gear is but unsure of the pinion. Give Randy of Randy's ring & pinion a call. He will know the answer.

Like the XJ, the YJ's D30 is a high-pinion reverse-cut axle but the TJ's is a low-pinion normal (and thus slightly weaker) cut. The R&P gears are incompatible, especially the pinion gear itself with the TJ's pinion gear using a crush sleeve and the YJ pinion using shims instead.

You're talking about the d30 though... he's asking about the d35:winky:
93 and later d35's are identical... prior to 93 the d35 carrier is narower. They changed it for ABS. This is the carrier though... the gears more more likely then not the same in all years.

I sold the d35 4.56 gears and carrier out of my 92 d35 axle to a guy who now runs them in his TJ. both times they were prof installed and they are working great for him.

I keep hearing they changed the carrier for ABS and as a person who has a miserable ABS YJ I cant figure out why they would need to change anything for ABS other than fit the sensors.

Halfway through the 93 model year for 6 cylinders and beginning in 94 for 4 cylinders the carrier changed to the ABS carrier for all applications with or without ABS equipped. They can be interchanged as long as the spider gears go with them. Of course if you need ABS then don't buy a non abs carrier.

Are you sure on that? I have a 93 and I was sold an ABS carrier and I have the old style d35. A pro that specializes in Jeeps did my gears and I had to buy the old style carrier.
It's such a PITA now I have 3 d35 carriers if anyone needs one. One with 3.07's, one non-ABS with broken 4.10's, and a brand new ABS carrier for 4.10's that's still in the box.
I also got screwed on this when I did my lock-right. I sold the ABS lock-right. I still have a non-ABS lock-right if anyone wants it. Only used it for 8 months before I blew my rear. Now I got the 8.8:D

If not, then the housing or the shafts would be different. The housings and shafts are all the same. You could have used the ABS carrier if you had gotten the spider gears to match. When ordering a Lockright there is no ambiguity with <92 or 94<. For 93's you are almost always asked for the axle BOM. They are looking for BOM 605528 which includes the ABS carrier. You can plug the code in here (http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?cvsp~deabill~2~) and you'll see that no 4.11 ratios show up so it was only 4 cylinders that had either or. The code 605502 is the 93 4 cylinder code. For 93's the 2310 is for the 605502 and the 2311 is for the 605528.
