cuz that would rule....

so am I on crack or can this be done... my information tells me that (outside of smog check nazi's) the real issue is that the cherokee tranny is like 2 inches longer than the YJ tranny, and while it would bolt right up, the lengty diff makes it a no go. Seems to me these 2 inches can be recovered somewhere somehow, couldn't you offset the engine mounts and run a shorter fan or something??? What about a different xfer case, does any other case change the clearence issue here??

And no I didn't grenade my tranny, I actually love teh 3 speed auto I got, it's just that they forgot to put 3rd between second and fourth.

Anyone seen this done/tried at all???

:D

i was thinking of doing this swap in my YJ...someone on this board did the AW4 swap into their YJ. It is 2" longer, but i believe with the SYE it will help out in that area.

sorry i dont know more details, like the persons name :(

Beats the **** outta me, I can't place most of the last 4 years of my life either, but then I'd have to hijack my own thread... but thanks for those links man... I'm reading them now...

Many have, it isnt to expensive with an AW4, with the prefered 700R4 expect to shuck out some cash. I would consider putting a flipped D300 in at the same time while you are at it.

Is it the tranny itself or is it the adapters and extra work required of installing a 700R4 that makes it more expensive than, say, an AW4? What are junkyard 90's-era 700R4 trannys selling for? Their lower first-gear makes them pretty sweet for a Wrangler.

WOW  that's some write up... good work... a couple differences come to mind, like whats different between the tj and yj as related to this swap, and how i would come up with a console like u show, my jeep is already an auto with the column shifter, so im not sure how that plays out, anyways, thats one cool write up you did, thanks for the link...

so is it sweet having the 4spd or what??

After reading OSM's writeup, I went out and bought an AW4 to swap into my '95 YJ. The tranny and computer are out of a '99. Since there is no need to hook up the OBD II stuff, I'm pretty sure there won't be a problem with compatibility. BTW, the AW4 is only about 3/4" longer than my AX15. I let everyone know how it works out when I'm finished. I'm excited to have an auto!

Doesn't Advance Adapters carry conversions for a Turbo350 to an I-6 and a NP232 transfer case? I thought I saw one of those things recently.

Or maybe it was Torqueflite... I know the 999 is one of those models, but for some strange reason i think the 999's a 3-speed...

Ahh, go for a NV4500... :loopyeye: Time honored and tested.

W_B,

You should be able to hook your current shifter cable up to the AW4. Just remember that D will be 4th, 2 will be 3rd, and 1 will be 1-2 on the AW4. Or you could figure out how to put a new insert in there for the numbers.

This shouldn't be anymore difficult than mine was. You don't even need to get the different brake pedals. That is optional. You could even weld the clutch and brake pedal together.

Jerry,

Ya I was refering to the adapters, they add up quickly. An AW4 should bolt up.

I dont see why a shifter should be such a problem just get the shifter from a cherokee (or with the tranny) cut a hole and put it up through.

Jerry, it's the adapters that make the 700R4 more expensive. You need one (an adapter) at both ends and they run ca $400.00 ~ $450.00 each. Also there is the problem of the CPS mounting.

The 700R4 is a *fantastic* tranny.
When I go to a 4 speed auto (probably will at some point, now that I'm hooked on autos after swapping in a TF999 in my '98 TJ), I'll use the 700R4.
To me, there are a lot of advantages to it over the AW4. Not the least of which is the fac that it's not an electronic tranny. Much more control over it. Also, the after market things available for them is *huge*.
You can get tons of different types of shift kits, lockup kits (allowing it to be locked up in any gear, ie some engine braking again ;) ), all types of different stall rate torque converter, race torque converts, that for our use would be indestructable, etc..
The AW4 is not a bad tranny, I'm not saying that. For me, I don't like electronic controlled trannies. Also there is virtually no after market supply for them.
Scott did a *GREAT* job with his install, and the writeup. My hats off to him !! He seems very happy with it.

Fred,

Once you understand how the TCM controls the tranny its easy to wire in switches to manually control any function you desire. I'm going to be adding a lockup switch too. I can think of some steep hills in Moab where that will come in handy.
