I am looking to swap dana 44’s from a 83 waggy to my 94YJ. I haven’t bought the axels yet because I wanted to make sure it would work out. Any ideas if it should or shouldn’t? And am I correct in saying that they either came with a read AMC 20 or dana 44 and the fronts are the dana44 right? The axles just kind of feel into my lap, so I am hoping to make this work, any ideas?

rear should be the 20. plenty axle, i was going to use one from an 81, but decided to go toy.

front MAY be vacum disco, which you should avoid. look for a box on top of the differential with 3 (2-4?) vacuum lines---leave it if thats the case.

edit: im using an '80 44 front with flat top knuckles from 78 chevy

is it safe to assume that if I put a locker in the front it would get rid of the vacum disco? and I thought some of them came with a d44 rear? the AMC 20 has a round shape to the diff cover if I am correct, right?

i believe they have different axle shafts as well, like the YJ. so you would not be getting rid of the vacu.

20 is round like a helmet!

80--->86 had a 20 (although im sure someone will say they have a 44 in an 86, for the most part theyre 20)

87+ had 44 f&r

6 months ago there was an 83 in my local yard. I go to look at it and the front axle is already off, sitting below the jeep. Im thinking 'sweet all the hard work is done!'

get up to it, has the vacuum disco....as if someone went through all of the work only to discover it wasnt worth the effort to drag away. It was still there 2 months ago.....rear was a 20

I've been looking for mine the past few weekends, and all I can find are the pre '87s with D44/20. ALL of the 44s I have seen so far have been non-disco, so your chances of it being a disco are not as likely, but not impossible either.

The AMC 20 in the Waggies is already loaded with one-piece shafts, so it really comes down to the housing strength; if you decide to use one, just truss the housing. Its the CJ 20s that you wanna avoid like the plauge.:not4me:

well, its the dana 44 and rear 20. I dont think I want to wast time with the 20, but the 44 looks good. only thing is that it is a vacum disco. whats the best way around that? adding a locker?

We did the same swap (used 89 GWag 44's) but I may be able to provide you some info.
The disconnect people are talking about is the passenger side axle shaft itself is 2 pieces. Adding a locker in the diff doesn't change that. I believe you can get one piece shafts that will replace the 2 piece setup from Moser if you want to shell out the bucks.
Look around for a complete running GWag. That's what we found and a friend bought the entire thing and we just nabbed the axles since he didn't need them for his project. I've seen several pairs of 44's and they always seem to be about $500 for the pair.
Have a look at our website for details on the install.
