I'm about to get a 4" Currie Suspension lift put on my 4 banger 95 YJ. I was quoted about $2700. I think that is pretty reasonable. My question is when I asked to get my Jeep regeared at the same time. They quoted me a price of $1400! I thought that was a little high and I can't afford both at the same time. He said that I could get by on my stock gears, I know its going to run a little slow with the 33" tires I plan on putting on it.

Is $1400 too high or should is it reasonable? Can I get by on not regearing it for now? Any suggestions would be good.

MAN!! that's crazy! I got my 3.5 suspension lift, a hi lift, sway bar discos, and a poly body lift, all for 1K. Did it all myself, saved money. 1400 for gears is too much. a good shop will do it for around 1K

I don't know how to put the lift on by myself. I can do some things, repairs to my Jeep but a lift just sounds too ominous for me! lol

I didn't get it regeared.

I made an appointment for the lift today. It includes the kit, quicker disconnects, all the shocks and stabilizer, t-case lowering kit (SYE would be nice but I'm in college and have no $$), 33X10.50 MT's, labor.

Is it ok to run without it getting regeared for now? I know it will be slow but will it be too slow to bare?

That is a ton of $$ for parts and labor on that lift. Well wait, I didn't see that you're getting tires too. Then it's not so bad. This past summer I just did a body lift and a 4" susp. lift on my 4cyl YJ. I'm not mechanically inclined but it's a pretty simple process if you read the directions. Nothing too difficult, just unbolt that, bolt this on. But, if a shop to do it, that's you're deal. BTW, I'm only 20 and a college student too.

As far as gearing goes. It's going to suck compared to what you have now, but not unbearable IMO. I have the 2.5L with 33x12.5 and it takes some getting use to. A tail wind will always be your friend, and a head wind your enemy. :D You should be able to deal with it just fine, I have for about 1.5 years. I'm just now looking to re-gear to 4.88s. Drive it for a while and see what YOU think. What may be tolerable to me may not with you. Around town it's not that big of a deal, my beef is when I'm trying to keep up with highway speeds. You speedo will read about 60mph (but your actual speed will be closer to 70) in 4th gear pulling around 2800-3000 rpms. I'd say save your money cause you'll probably want to re-gear in the future.

yeah, you can get by with out re-gearing, but it will be slow, and your top gear may be useless, just something to think about

Save yourself alot of time and money with a yj ride should be your main concern. I ran a 2 inch body lift $79 +$700 for some 31s and rims. No alignment needed, truly a do it yourself job. Never got stuck with the mud tires and looked sweet$$$.

do some reading up, do some searches on the board. is sooo easy!!!
you just need some sockets and a hammer....simple tools. a floor jack and two jack stands. if you dont have those, they are like 100$ at an auto store....adn you will have them for future mods.
save the money, do it yourself. find a local club in the area to see if they can help....even get some buds to come and help too. then get your wheels and tires online, may be cheaper!!!
