Well i am not saying yes or no bc this is JU :D but when i bought my d30 lockright locker, it came out of a TJ d30 with 3.07 gears and went in my YJ d30 with 4.56 gears.

soo.... according to Jack at No Excuses. Yes.

NO...

There is an ABS carrier and a non-ABS carrier. Even some YJ's without ABS had ABS carriers. The spider/sides gears are different.

The TJ pinion uses a crush sleeve to set preload, the YJ uses the stronger shim preload design. Based on that, I'd think the cases would be different.

We're talking D30 front axle dude. All the carriers are the same cj/yj/tj. There is however one for low gears and one for high gears.

That has always been my understanding as well.

...discovered when I was putting together a group buy on *ARB's for our club.

Since 1971,
All Dana 30
- CJ5, 6, 7, 8, XJ, YJ, ZJ, TJ & WJ

use one of two ARB models

RD30 model for 3.73 & up

or

RD31 model for 3.54 & dn

*The ARB units replace the entire carrier

A carrier and a case are two different things.... A carrier holds the ring gear and spiders/side gears. The case holds the carrier.

That's why the CJ and TJ gears are not interchangeable even though they are standard cut. I suspect the ring gear is interchangeable but the pinion shaft is definately not.

OOPS.. my bad. Should have read the thread a little closer. My comments pertain to the rear axle D35.

Sorry for any confusion.

Sorry 'bout that, I misread the post and thought the question was about the housings and not the carrier. Ahh well... that's what I get for going out with the boys last night and having too many Jack n' Cokes. :)

Just to reinfoce that there is no difference, we just swapped a Detroit out of a TJ D30 into a CJ D30 and it works just fine :D

I am also getting ready to swap the Detroit in my TJ D30 into a XJ high pinion D30.

Not to totally change the topic but is it safe to assume that the XJ high pinion D30 was a "bolt on" mod? I remember you talking about doing this in April but I don't remember if it was just an easy switch.

Thanks.

If the axle were new, had the same gears, and I wanted something un-modified, then yes it is a direct bolt in :D

The axle I am dealing with needs some work. I am swapping gears, reinforcing the brackets, installing new ball joints and then adding a few special "MrBlaine" modifications so that my front suspension works better. My Warn hub conversion will then swap right in and I can bolt it up to the Jeep.

I will net about a 20% increase in axle strength from the high pinion/reverse cut gears. My front driveshaft will move up about 3 inches higher out of the rocks and also return to its stock "at rest" position even though I have 4+ inches of lift..
