I talked to a friend of mine who has built a couple and he says that I can use the Permatex Gasket out of the tube for everything. Sounds too easy and inexpensive to me. Any ideas. He said use the Ultra Blue for the intake side and High Temp Red for the exhaust. What do YOU all think?

Kinda depends how flat your surfaces are and how well they mate up. Too loose a fit on the intake side and you risk a intake leak.run lean and fry your pistons. Exhaust side might blowout under pressure and be annoying not to mention a hot spot cracking your manifold. That said it's pretty much up to you but gaskets can't be that expensive can they?? JMHO

I think it will be ok on the intake side. It is the exhaust I am worried about. And the external gaskey kit is $80. Alot more then $9 of Permatex. :D

If you didn't need gasket's, then why do they leave the factory with 'em???

also, it seems to me that you've had some problems with your 'ski a couple of times, why half-ass it only to have to tear it apart in 2 months???

working on 'ski's is a PITA I'd do it right the first time.....it would blow ass to be stuck in the middle of a lake from a ****ty gasket/makeshift job....

JMHO

True, this is the ski that threw a rod...I am trying to get it running for my bro as inexpensively as possible. But I guess I can go get those gaskets tomorrow. I just thought if Permatex would work, why not use it.

usually, you put a small amount of rtv sealant on either mating surface, with the gasket in between.

there is a liquid that you can use to mold into a gasket, but blue rtv is not it. blue rtv is to provide a better seal used in conjunction with the gasket to prevent blow-by.

however, if it is just a thin paper gasket or cork, you can buy gasket material as mentioned above and carefully make your own...$80 does seem a bit high.
