is there something magical about replacement gas tanks for 91 + yj 4.0 - 20 gallon gas tanks?

mine seems to be leaking, so i thought i would do some searching. seems hardly anyone on the net sells them. found one at www.jeep4x4center.com, but its $285, what gives. any help would be greatly appreciated.

oh and opinions on plastic vs steel would also be helpful.
(eventhough the only one i've found is plastic so it might not matter)

thanks,

kevin

Well for one thing, the 15 and 20 Gallon fuel tanks are the same tank. The only difference is a vent hose liner that extends into the tank on the 15 Gallon version. This liner is shorter on the 20 Gallon. I know this for a fact, because I removed my 15 Gallon tank, and cut that liner down. Now I have a 20 Gallon tank. DC did this back then in order to charge a few hundred bucks for the upgraded tank option, and they could use the same part for either option, so it was all profit.

If you can't find a 20Gallon, then get a 15 and shorten the hose. It's very simple to do! The only other difference is the sending unit that goes in there, but you'll probably end up using your existing sending unit anyway! HTH!

ok so 15/20 that makes sense, is there a diiference between a tank for 4.2 and 4.0. most sites list tanks fot 87 -90 and nothing for 91 and up. is there a difference in the way the sending unit mounts?

Hey Kevin,

I know this doesn't answer your question about using an older one, but here is a write-up on the 15 to 20 gallon conversion.

The sending units on the earlier (90 and older) are rectangular, or at least mine was. I ran into the same issue as you. The aftermarket tanks have a round receiver hole and I think the 91 and newer tanks do as well (I THINK).

I ended up going to a junk yard and picked one up for $35 including sending unit and stock skid. It was a 15gal and I did the conversion to 20gal.

Junk yards are the best bet for these poly tanks! $50 at the most.

I'd probably go the junkyard route too.

This place sells new ones. Not sure about $, you might want to give them a call.
